What is the role of business and entrepreneurship in Islam? Should Muslims strive to become entrepreneurs? This is a topic rarely talked about and in this blog post, we will explore the connection between Islam and entrepreneurship and give you five reasons why every Muslim should consider starting their own business.

Reason #1: Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) was an entrepreneur 

Our own prophet Muhammad PBUH was a businessman and an entrepreneur, he created true value around him not just through his business dealings but also through his character and he was known as “Al-Amin” which means “the trustworthy”.

If there’s one example that we should take after as Muslims it’s the example of our prophet and this is the first and most important link between entrepreneurship and Islam.

Reason #2: Entrepreneurship is about creating value 

Entrepreneurship is at the core of all Islamic values because it’s all about value creation, as an entrepreneur you have to create value in the lives of your customers and improve their lives and society as a whole, and by doing so and solving their problems they reward you in the form of money.

So building a business not only has a financial impact on your wealth to allow you to be more wealthy and thus spend that money to improve your community and society but it also allows you to have a spiritual impact by improving the lives of your customers.

 Reason #3: You get to maximize your zakat impact

As Muslims, we are obligated to give 2.5%of our wealth towards charity every single year and as an entrepreneur that also comes out of a portion of your business profits.

Not only that but if you are working with a team or if you employ other Muslims then they are also giving zakat or charity through the income that they earned working for you, that means your zakat impact is magnified and you not only get rewarded for your donations but also for the donations of your employees and your team.

Reason #4: You’re able to practice your faith with freedom 

As an entrepreneur, you control your own schedule, which means you don’t have to have an awkward conversation with your boss about taking a break for prayer time, or that you don’t know the date of Eid until the night before. 

You get to spend the time that you want on your worship and this strengthens your connection with Allah SWT and gives you the freedom that you want to practice your faith freely. 

Reason #5: You can change the narrative

We all know how negatively Islam and Muslims are always portrayed in the media, but thankfully as an entrepreneur and a business owner you have the opportunity to change that.

Because as a Muslim you represent Islam and when you serve your clients with honesty, trustworthiness, willingness to serve, and a positive attitude, then that is an opportunity to build bridges of understanding and connections with others and change the narrative surrounding Islam and Muslims.

You’ll never know if all it took to change someone’s mind about Islam was a positive interaction or a smile or to benefit from your business or product.
